Cynicism on Summit Bloviations

Former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau (1968-1979, 1980-1984) expressed a certain cynicism about gatherings of Western leaders, as it tends to be a tedious exercise of preening, bloviating, hobnobbing and living the high life on the taxpayers' dime.

Much ado was made about COP 21, the UN Climate Change Summit in Paris which gathered 148 world leaders.  Speakers were supposed to be limited to remarks of three minutes.  But President Barack Obama exceeded his hot air limit by over 11 minutes.

Organizers tried to prompt the pontificating President to conclude by using a buzzer.  Mr. Obama ignored the bells for more than two minutes.  It is dubious if Mr.  Obama's excessive CO footprint said anything new or newsworthy, other than being a spotlight hog.
