Conyers Is a Cunning Linguist at House English Only Hearing

At a House Judiciary Subcommittee Hearing on Representative Steve King (R-IA 5th ) English Language Unity Act of 2011 (H.R. 997), Ranking Member Representative John Conyers (D-MI 14th) chose to make his opening remarks in painfully pronounced phonetic Spanish.

Presumably Conyers was pandering to Latinos while making arguments for inclusion by playing political theater.  For those who actually understand Castillian, parts of Conyer’s slowly spoken statement were hilarious, especially when he said: “Este burrito con verguenza” (this burrito with shame).

Well, it’s August in Washington during a Presidential Election year so it’s silly season to score points before returning to their districts to campaign as incumbents.

The Subcommittee Chairman had a great comeback which underlined the absurdity of the stunt as well as the obsession for diversity.  He suggested that in the interest of fairness and diversity that Conyers repeat his statement in Yiddish and Vietnamese.

This incident causes enquiring minds to wonder if Conyer’s chooses to read Playboy Spanish edition in public?

Maybe Conyers is still trying to read the bill. After all, the Obamacare legislation was 2,700 pages and required more than two days and two lawyers to explain what the bill means.
